25 Years of Paul West Used Cars: What We’ve Learned About Car Maintenance (And What You Can Totally Ignore)
Can you believe it? Paul West Used Cars is officially turning 25!
Over a quarter-century of helping our community get behind the wheel, we’ve handed over keys to thousands of drivers, inspected endless used vehicles, and heard every car myth in the book. As a Buy Here Pay Here dealership, our goal has always been simple: keep reliable, affordable cars on the road so our drivers can get to work, pick up the kids, and live their lives without constant breakdown stress.
After 25 years of looking under hoods, we’ve learned what keeps a budget-friendly used car running for decades—and what maintenance upsells are pure nonsense.
Here is our honest, 25-year silver-anniversary breakdown of what really matters for your car, and what you can safely ignore.
The Non-Negotiables: Do NOT Skip These 3 Things
If you want your vehicle to cross the 200,000-mile mark without throwing a temper tantrum, focus your energy and money right here:
1. Oil Changes (The Cheap Life Insurance)
If there’s one rule carved in stone at Paul West Used Cars, it’s this: Oil is cheaper than an engine.
Modern synthetic oils last longer than the old 3,000-mile rule (usually 5,000 to 7,500 miles depending on your car), but ignoring your oil level entirely is the fastest way to turn a solid vehicle into a paperweight. Check your dipstick once a month!
2. Coolant & Overheating Prevention
An engine running low on oil dies slowly. An engine running out of coolant dies instantly. A tiny radiator leak or a stuck thermostat can warp an engine block in minutes. Keep an eye on your temperature gauge, and if you see steam or a sweet smell coming from under the hood, pull over immediately.
3. Brakes & Tires (Safety First)
You don’t need top-of-the-line racing tires, but you do need tread and stopping power. Checking your tire pressure monthly prevents uneven wear, saves gas, and keeps you safe in sudden rainstorms. If your brakes start squealing, don’t wait until they start grinding—pads are inexpensive to replace; ruined rotors are not!
What You Can Safely Ignore (Or Skip the Upsell)
Not every mechanic recommendation deserves your hard-earned cash. Here are a few common “car care” myths that usually aren’t worth worrying about:
The 3,000-Mile Oil Change Myth: Unless you’re driving a severe-duty commercial truck in extreme conditions, changing your oil every 3,000 miles is outdated advice from the 1970s. Follow your owner’s manual or aim for every 5,000–7,500 miles.
Paying $50 for Cabin Air Filters: Oil change shops love showing you a dusty cabin filter and asking for $40–$60 to swap it. You can buy the part at an auto store for $15 and swap it yourself in under 5 minutes without tools.
Engine Flushes & Exotic Additives: Magic bottles promising to “restore compression” or “flush engine sludge” are usually snake oil. If you perform basic oil changes on time, your engine cleans itself.
Premium Gas for Standard Cars: Unless your high-performance vehicle specifically says “Premium Fuel Required” on the gas door, paying extra for high-octane gasoline adds zero extra horsepower or fuel efficiency.
Here’s to the Next 25 Years!
Keeping a car running smooth doesn’t have to break the bank—it just takes a little consistency with the basics.
